I was reminded this week in my recent podcast episode entitled “World Travels with Dusty Throttles,” about how good people are—contrary to what is often heard from our news and media outlets. Although many might think that what Dusty Throttles is doing in traveling around the world by motorcycle is nothing short of extraordinary, he claims to be discovering the extraordinary, just in the ordinary. A fascinating journey of discovery to be sure. It made me think of a recent personal experience where I too discovered the extraordinary with the ordinary.
My wife and I often talk about our dreams from the night before at breakfast. My wife is better at it than I am as I rarely remember mine. For instance, in a recent dream she was in very shallow water, not to her knees. She was far enough from shore as to be unable to see it. Around her, she could see sharks, crocodiles, barracuda, piranha and other dangerous marine life that prey on humans. But they couldn’t get her, the water was too low. What started as interesting, however, became horrifying as the water around her began to rise. She had no way to get to shore as the water got deeper. Her dream then ended.
I didn’t remember any of my dream from that night but decided to tell her about my morning walk. I started by telling her about my podcast guest, Dusty Throttles, and his motorcycle travels around the world but the extraordinary thing was how ordinarily nice most of his encounters were. I said that though my walk wasn’t worldly, outside of being in it, there was a surprising amount going in our area at 7 a.m. in the morning.
