A few weeks ago, I started my article “Science Confirms Belief In God” writing about Oxford mathematician Dr. John Lennox and his lecture on the Gospel of John. His lecture was on how the Word Became Flesh, which titles the John 1:1-18 section in the ESV translation of the Bible. I was intrigued with the subject of his lecture having written, in a previous article about Lennox’s supposition that materialism would end with science announcing information and data as the third fundamental quantity or entity alongside energy and matter. Lennox had referred to John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” He related “the Word” and “the Word was God” to information being that fundamental quantity from which the universe started. Though interested in how he was going to explain the idea and the end of materialism, I got caught up in his explanation on how the works of the law identified how we sinned but did little to nothing to help us not to. I decided I had to first write about the works of the law and would return later to words and information becoming a fundamental quantity. This is that return although I discovered something quite different from what I anticipated I would.

I find it interesting how, in our material world, words are really nothing yet difficult to say they’re not something. They’re not matter or energy as they’re not made up of cells or molecules or atoms. They’re indescribable as material things. As I thought and read about this, I began to see words and information as an entity into consciousness. They are very much a part of our existential world or the reality that we experience, yet they defy material description whether that be as matter or energy.
