This week started with me catching a snippet of Rainn Wilson’s visit to the Rich Roll Podcast talking about spirituality and physicality. What caught my attention was what Wilson said about reality. “The reason why spirituality is important is because it is reality. We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”
His words caught me off-guard because I don’t often hear people saying such things especially with conviction. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Rainn Wilson, he is the actor who portrayed Dwight Schrute on NBC’s sitcom The Office. I will often forget that the actor who is portraying a character is usually not who the actor is. Our minds often trick us in this manner giving us a false impression on what we are seeing. Schrute, Wilson’s character in the show, craves authority over his co-workers and relishes any task, minor as it might be, that anyone gives him. He acts superior to many individuals and though often good in crisis, Wilson’s Schrute is known to be quite gullible, ignorant and naïve. Though Wilson was speaking quite differently on the podcast, I was at first hearing his character Schrute speak. But I was surprised enough at what I heard to stop and pay attention, confused by what I was hearing Wilson say and that it was not Schrute.
